Hew Griffiths's legal battle to avoid facing the justice system of a country he's never been to has failed, the accused internet software pirate departing for the US yesterday after a bungled earlier extradition attempt.
Griffiths, 44, is a British national and Australian resident who arrived from Britain at age seven, and was living with his aged father on the NSW Central Coast.
He has never travelled abroad nor ever applied for and Australian passport.
But the US Department of Justice clained he was the mastermind of a global software piracy racket and requested his extradition. In a historic ruling in December federal Justice and Customs Minister Chris Ellison obliged.
